Wig Design Basics

What Are The Most Popular Wig Caps?

The first most common cap construction is the “Monofilament-Top”. A wig made with a Mono Top is better for those who are used to more volume or height on top.

Mono-Top is a wefted wig that features an inset of transparent micro-mesh sewn in at the crown, with the individual strands of synthetic fiber or human hair hand-tied into the mesh. Mono-top wigs are generally more natural- looking, as the hair appears to be growing out of a real scalp.

This type of cap was first developed for women who had experienced significant hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, or other medical reasons, as the transparent mesh allowed the bare scalp to show through.

You may sometimes see Mono -Top wigs referred to as “medical wigs” for this reason. However, many women with full heads of hair prefer the Mono -Top wigs for their superior natural appearance.

With a Mono-Top wig, the hair can be more sharply parted on either side of the head than with a conventional wefted cap wig.

There are two notable variations to the standard Mono-Top wig: one can be seen in the CreatedHair.com Designs line, which features a double layer of monofilament mesh at the crown. This extra layer protects a bare scalp from irritation caused by the tiny, scratchy knots created by hand-tying the strands into the monofilament material.

The other is the Multi-Directional Monofilament Crown featured in many of our CreatedHair wigs. The hair on this type of wig will part sharply and lay down in multiple directions with greater ease than most of the other brands.

This type of cap construction is considered to be the finest in the world. Generally, Mono-Top wigs are recognized as a higher quality wig product, and are more expensive than standard wefted cap wigs largely due to the fact that it takes 3 – 5 more inches of hair to create the volume needed for a Mono-Top wig.

A slightly less expensive alternative is a wig featuring a Monofilament “Part”, rather than a full monofilament top. These are wigs that have a thin strip of monofilament mesh sewn in just at the left, right, or

center part line. Be aware; In these cases, the location of the part CANNOT be changed.

All mono-top wigs feature “Tape Tabs”

on the inside of the cap, usually in 4 or 5 spots. These tabs are made of a shiny material made from polyurethane, and allow the wearer to use double-

sided tape to secure the wig to the head, if necessary.

Silk Top

Silk Top also known as French Top is for those who do not desire volume. It is flatter on top. The knots are hidden in between 2-3 layers of thin material, one being silk, the
other lace which adds to its flat design. The closes layerto the scalp is made in a light beige or white material to create a strong natural looking part creating the illusion of
a scalp.

By hand sewing/injecting the roots/knots of the hairs under the silk base, the scalp area where you have the silk base, provides the illusion that the hair is coming from your own scalp. Making the knots 100% invisible. You don’t need to bleach the knots, you don’t need to worry about any other techniques to make the knots invisible and undetectable.

Our Silk Top Bases are available in 5 different sizes: 4′′x 4′′, 5′′x 5”, 6′′x 6′′ 13′′x 4′′ & Full Silk Based Cap. The sizes listed below determine the amount coverage of the silk base.

Whatever size you choose the silk material begins approximately 1/2 a centimeter from the hairline. (There is 1/2 a centimeter of Swiss Lace before the silk top begins). All of the Virgin Lace wigs can have a silk base added to them.

4′′ x 4′′
Has just enough coverage to part the hair in the middle, on the side, & off center, which is where most clients part their hair. goes back 4′′ from hairline and across 4′′.

5′′ x 5′′ or 6′′ x 6′′
Has just enough coverage to part the hair in the middle, on the side, & off center, which is where most clients part their hair goes back 4′′ from hairline and across 4′′.

Wefted Caps

Wefted Caps A commonly requested cap is the “Wefted Cap”. The vast majority are also known as “Capless” wigs. They are constructed from rows of wefts (fringes) of synthetic fiber or human hair that have been sewn together into the shape of a cap, but do not have an underlying solid cap, per se.

There is open wefted that work best for those with hair. For those with thin or no hair we suggest Close Wefted Back which has a lining that covers the wefts. *Open Wefted caps are not recommended for complete hair loss due to the visibility of the scalp.

The top has a multi directional part with a natural skin top that
resembles a scalp. The back has a lightweight stretch material
that the wefts are sewn on.

  • Is adjustable
  • The closed material prevents hair from coming through and
    provides more structure
  • Adjustable cap
  • Ear tabs
  • Very durable

Another type of cap construction which is very popular with many of styles on this site is the “Fully Hand-Tied”.

100% fully hand-tied wigs are labor-intensive. It takes a worker one full day to completely hand-tie a wig, and after this, the wig still needs to be hand cut and styled. As realistic looking and comfortable as a 100% hand-tied wig can be they do have a tendency to stretch over time. The good thing is that CreatedHair has an excellent repair team on hand to do alterations and take in the piece if needed for a small charge.

The top has a multi directional part with a natural skin top that resembles a scalp Every hair is individually tied by hand to a soft mesh cap Very delicate. Must be handled with extra care Most natural appearance of hair growth Most expensive *Available as special order only. Please allow 10-12 weeks for delivery

A great option to consider is 1/2 Hand-Tied /1/2 Close Wefted Back. These have hair sewn in by hand on top with close wefted back. The top has a multi directional part with a natural skin top that resembles a scalp.

The back has wefts {rows of hair) sewn on to an open or closed cap. It is lightweight, has an adjustable cap, and ear tabs.

Lace Front Wig It creates a realistic looking hairline. When properly worn with a special adhesive, it is almost undetectable that it is not the wearer’s own growing hair. This is best for those wearing their hair back or parted down the center or off center.

Full Lace Cap, they are typically recommended to the veteran lace wig wearer and very discerning client who may want lots of styling options and parting options from hairline all the way to the nape. This is also perfect for clients who have complete hair loss, or medical needs etc and in need of a total hair replacement system. For the best coverage, we recommend a full silk base lace unit it is a little pricey but It’s well worth the investment.

Adjustable Straps

Mostly ll wigs will have adjustment straps at the nape (back /neck area) to allow the wig to be sized down for a more snug fit. Generally, these straps will have Velcro attachments, but will sometimes feature hooks that fit into tiny adjustment pockets. Either system works well, and both are used on inexpensive as well as expensive wigs.

Wiglets/ Toppers

A “Wiglet”, commonly known as Toppers, features a smaller wig cap. Wiglets can be used to cover thinning spots on the head, or to add volume or fullness in general. They come in a variety of cap styles and sizes. There are wefted, monofilament-top, and pull-through wiglets.

Toppers are made in dimensions generally ranging from 3′′x 4′′ to 5′′ x 7′′ or larger 7” X 9” with many more combinations to fit the client’s individual’s needs.

Toppers are made in dimensions generally ranging from 3′′x 4′′ to 5′′ x 7′′ or larger 7” X 9” with many more combinations to fit the client’s individual’s needs.

They usually attach by using pressure-sensitive combs (toupee clips) that are sewn into the top and/or sides of the cap or bonded on with glue to the scalp where no hair exists. Many times one will choose to shave their head in a U Shape to adhere to the U Shape of the wiglet.

A “Fall” or “3/4 Cap Wig” is designed to be worn with the wearer’s own hair showing at the front hairline and down the temples to the ears. It should fall just at the occipital bone across the back fo the head. Most falls utilize conventional wefted caps. They are attached using a half-round comb at the front (bangs area) and another at the back (nape area) for an extremely secure fit. Some falls feature a cloth headband (almost always black) which affords a slight separation between the color of the fall, and the color of the wearer’s own hair, which can be
beneficial when these colors don’t match exactly.

Lace Top Wig

Forget trying to hide or camouflage the knots at the hairline! The knots are completely hidden so you can confidently wear your unit, even without a wig cap!

Lace Top and Single lace placed in the front lends a natural hairline and realistic scalp look. This works for clipping or taping a wig, a great option for wearers who are dealing hair loss in the top/front areas.

“Meeting Amy was a wonderful experience and her positive attitude made losing my hair less difficult. I was delighted to have her help when selecting my hairpieces. She is so encouraging that you feel that you can handle any problem. Thank you, Amy, for your “life-support.”

“I took my friend to CreatedHair and met with Amy Gibson. My friend has been suffering from extreme hair thinning and she’s only 28. But meeting Amy today changed her life in two ways: 1. She was with someone who also has alopecia, alleviating so much of her fear. Amy was so incredibly patient; 2. It was amazing how she put her into a beautiful human hair wig, and by the time we were done styling, she looked exactly like herself again and raved about how comfortable and realistic her new wig was. Thank you Amy, you’re a lifesaver!!”

“I recently lost my hair due to radiation, and that was the heartbreaking moment when I realized things weren’t going to be the same from that point on in my life. I then found Amy and her CreatedHair studio, where they completely transformed my hair into something that was not only what my hair looked like before, but into something that I couldn’t have ever imagined. This isn’t just a review for CreatedHair, this is a thank you letter to Amy and her master stylist Kathleen, who instilled the confidence I once had back into my life. CreatedHair is a great business run by amazing people. Definitely a five-star way to go. “
